Vive la Difference! A Survey of the Great French Composers
“I cannot perform French music,” admitted the great Italian Baroque era violinist and composer Arcangelo Corelli. “It’s in a different language.” Over the centuries the French have created a unique classical music accent, distinct from the two major national streams that have traditionally dominated Western “art” music—Italy for opera and Germany/Austria for instrumental works. This course guides listeners through a panorama of great music ranging from Jean-Philippe Rameau, Hector Berlioz, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc and other engaging Gallic composers past and present. Lectures will be illustrated with recordings from Mr. Lowe’s extensive library of CDs.
